The good news is that almost all new phones - and certainly the more expensive smartphones like Samsung Galaxies as well as any iPhone model above the iPhone 4 are hybrid phones, having CDMA as well as GSM, and will therefore work virtually worldwide. The reason is that Verizon uses CDMA for its service in the United States while almost every other country on the planet uses the (arguably superior), GSM system.
